Funding Rates Explained: What They Tell You Before a Squeeze

A crypto funding rate is the fee longs and shorts pay each other to keep perps near spot. Read it as APR, price the cost, and spot a squeeze early.

A funding rate is the fee that longs and shorts on a perpetual future pay each other so the perp price stays close to spot. Positive funding means longs pay shorts; negative means shorts pay longs. Read as an annual rate (APR), it tells you which side is crowded and how much it costs them to stay in.

On 9 October 2026 at 23:29 UTC, our radar showed ETH longs paying +11.0% APR while BTC longs paid +0.7%. Same market, same day, very different crowding. This guide shows how to read that gap.

Why perpetual futures need funding

A dated future expires and settles at the spot price, so it converges on its own. A perpetual never expires. Without a mechanism pulling it back, it could drift far from spot whenever one side gets enthusiastic.

Funding is that mechanism. When the perp trades above spot, funding turns positive and longs pay shorts. Holding a long gets more expensive, opening a short gets paid, and the gap closes. When the perp trades below spot, the flow reverses.

The exchange does not keep this money. It moves between traders.

How the funding rate is calculated

Most venues build the rate from two parts:

  1. A premium component: how far the perp price sits from the spot index over the funding window.
  2. An interest component: a small fixed rate that reflects the cost difference between holding the quote and base asset.

The result is paid every funding period. On many centralised exchanges that is every 8 hours. On SorooshX, funding is paid every hour, which means a crowded position bleeds steadily rather than in three lumps a day.

Read funding as APR, not as a per-period number

A per-period number like 0.00126% looks like nothing. Convert it:

PeriodMultiply byExample: 0.00126% per period
1 hour8,760≈ 11.0% APR
8 hours1,095≈ 1.4% APR

That 0.00126% an hour is ETH's +11.0% APR from our radar. Annualising puts every asset and every venue on the same scale, which is why our radar and coin pages show funding as APR.

What it costs you

Cost = position notional × APR × days held ÷ 365

  • $10,000 ETH long at +11.0% APR for 7 days: 10,000 × 0.11 × 7 ÷ 365 ≈ $21.10
  • The same long on BTC at +0.7% APR: ≈ $1.34

On a swing trade at 5x margin, $21 a week on $2,000 of margin is about 1% of your capital gone before price moves. That is the hidden cost of trading the crowded side.

What funding tells you about positioning

Funding is a crowding gauge. It shows who is willing to pay to hold a view.

Near zero (BTC at +0.7% APR): neither side is paying up. The move is driven by spot, or positioning is balanced. Little fuel for a squeeze in either direction.

Clearly positive (ETH, SOL, BNB at +11.0% APR): longs are paying to stay long. Fine in a steady uptrend. Dangerous if price stalls, because longs are losing money every hour while waiting.

**Negative while price rises (ARB at -14.8% APR, +4.77% on the day):** this is the setup to watch. Shorts are paying to bet against a rising price. Each hour costs them, and each leg up pushes some to close. Closing a short means buying, which lifts price further.

Extreme on TradeFi perps: funding is not only a crypto signal. On the same snapshot, heating oil (HO) perps showed +104.1% APR and MRNA -31.6% APR. When funding on an index or stock perp goes that far, the perp has moved well away from the underlying and the crowded side is paying heavily for it.

Track funding with price. Add the coins you trade to your watchlist and check funding next to the chart before you size a position.

How a squeeze builds, step by step

  1. Crowding. Funding stretches in one direction, positive for longs or negative for shorts.
  2. Stall. Price stops moving in the crowded side's favour. They keep paying.
  3. Trigger. A macro print, a large order or a liquidation cluster pushes price against them.
  4. Cascade. Forced closes add to the move. Liquidations of longs mean market sells; liquidations of shorts mean market buys.
  5. Reset. Funding snaps back toward zero once the crowded side is cleared.

Funding tells you about step 1. It does not time step 3. Use it to decide which side you do not want to be on when the trigger arrives, not as an entry signal on its own.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Reading one period in isolation. A single high print can be noise. Watch whether funding holds at that level for several hours or days.
  • Comparing raw rates across venues. An 8-hour rate and an hourly rate are not comparable until both are annualised.
  • Fading funding with no level. "Funding is high, so short" is a view without an invalidation. Pair it with a price level that proves you wrong.
  • Ignoring funding on long holds. At +11% APR, a month-long leveraged long pays close to 1% of notional in funding alone.

Funding on TradeFi perps

Gold, oil, FX and stock perps on SorooshX use the same mechanism. In our snapshot, gold funding sat at +5.5% APR with price at 4,190.40. If you hold a gold perp for weeks instead of buying a dated contract, funding replaces the roll cost. You can trade gold on-chain and see the live funding rate in the terminal.

Want a rule that cuts exposure when funding stretches past a threshold? You can automate this with an agent.

All funding and price figures are from the SorooshX market radar snapshot at 23:29 UTC on 9 October 2026. SorooshX settles on a public on-chain order book (Hyperliquid), so the same funding data is public.

Frequently asked questions

What is a funding rate in crypto?

It is a periodic payment between long and short holders of a perpetual future. When it is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. It keeps the perp price close to spot.

Is a negative funding rate bullish?

Not by itself. It means shorts are paying to hold their position. If price rises while funding stays negative, shorts are under pressure and a squeeze becomes more likely.

How do I convert a funding rate to APR?

Multiply the per-period rate by the number of periods in a year. An hourly rate is multiplied by 8,760; an 8-hour rate by 1,095.

How much does funding cost on a position?

Position notional × APR × days held ÷ 365. A $10,000 long at +11% APR held for 7 days pays about $21.
