How to Trade Gold 24/7 On-Chain (and What It Costs)

Gold trades 24/7 as an on-chain perpetual. How it works, what it costs in funding and fees, weekend gaps, margin math, and a worked $10,000 example.

You trade gold on-chain through a gold perpetual, a contract that tracks the gold price, settles in USDC, and trades every hour of every day. Holding it costs funding plus trading fees. At the +5.5% APR funding on 12 October 2026, a $10,000 long held for a week pays about $10.55 in funding.

Gold perps were at 4,172.90 at 11:14 UTC on 12 October 2026, with $25M of 24-hour volume on SorooshX's on-chain order book (Hyperliquid). Here is how that market works and where the costs hide.

What you're actually trading

A gold perp is not gold. It's a perpetual futures contract whose price is pulled toward the gold price by funding payments. You get:

  • Price exposure to gold in either direction, long or short.
  • Margin, so you can trade a $10,000 position with less than $10,000.
  • No expiry. Unlike a COMEX contract, there is no roll date.
  • No metal. There is no delivery and nothing to store.

You don't get custody of an asset. If you want to own gold for twenty years, a perp is the wrong tool. If you want to act on a CPI print at 12:30 UTC on a Wednesday, or on a headline at 03:00 on a Sunday, it's the right one.

Why "24/7" matters for gold

The traditional gold futures market closes for the weekend and for a daily break. News doesn't. An on-chain gold perp keeps trading through both.

That has two consequences:

  1. You can react. A Sunday-night geopolitical headline can be traded the moment it lands, not at the Monday open.
  2. Gaps move. When the traditional market is shut, the perp's price is set only by the traders on-chain. When the traditional market reopens, the perp can jump to meet it. If you hold over the weekend, size for that jump, not for a normal weekday range.

Weekend liquidity is also thinner. On weekdays our radar has shown gold perp volume between $25M (12 October) and $46M (9 October) a day. Expect less on a Saturday, so expect wider spreads too.

What it costs: the three lines on the bill

1. Funding

Funding is the payment between longs and shorts that keeps the perp near the gold price. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts. It is quoted per hour on-chain; we annualise it so it's comparable.

On 12 October 2026 gold funding was +5.5% APR. The math for a long:

PositionDays heldFunding paid
$1,0007about $1.05
$10,0007about $10.55
$10,00030about $45.21

(Position × 5.5% × days ÷ 365.) A short at the same rate would receive those amounts.

Funding changes. It is cheap today because the gold perp isn't crowded. Compare that with oil, where the same radar shows WTI perp funding at -69.6% APR: shorts there pay heavily. Check gold's current rate on the terminal before you size a multi-week hold.

2. Trading fees

You pay a fee to open and another to close. Rates depend on whether your order adds liquidity (limit) or takes it (market), and on your volume tier, so we don't quote a number here. Check the fee shown on the order ticket. A round trip on a market order costs more than one on limit orders, and for a short-term trade that difference can be bigger than a week of funding.

3. Slippage and spread

A $25M-a-day market is liquid enough for most retail sizes on a weekday. Large market orders on a weekend aren't. Use limit orders when the market is thin.

Margin math: how far gold can move against you

With 5x margin, a $10,000 gold position needs $2,000 of collateral. A 20% move against you would wipe out that $2,000, and liquidation comes a bit earlier than that because of the maintenance margin.

The last two radar readings for gold's 24-hour move were +1.15% (9 October) and -0.50% (12 October). On days like those, a 5x position swings roughly 2.5–6% of your collateral. That's manageable. At 20x the same day is 10–24% of your collateral, and one bad CPI print can take the position out.

The desk rule: pick the stop first (for example, a close under 4,100 this week), then size the position so that hitting it costs a fixed share of your account. The leverage number follows from that, not the other way round.

A worked example

Say you think a soft US core CPI print pushes gold through 4,200.

  • Entry: long $10,000 notional at 4,172.90, 5x margin ($2,000 collateral).
  • Stop: 4,100. That's about 1.7% below entry, a loss of about $175 plus fees.
  • Target: 4,250, about 1.8% above entry, a gain of about $185 before costs.
  • Funding for 3 days at +5.5% APR: about $4.52.

The trade's risk is the stop distance. Funding is a rounding error over three days and a real cost over three months.

Track it with the rest of your book. Add gold and BTC to your watchlist to see whether gold and the BTC chart move together on data days.

How to trade gold on-chain, step by step

  1. Connect a wallet on SorooshX and deposit USDC.
  2. Open the gold perp terminal to trade gold on-chain.
  3. Choose long or short, set margin (start low), and enter size. The minimum order value is $10.
  4. Set the stop-loss and take-profit when you open the trade, not after the move.
  5. Check funding on the ticket before any hold longer than a few days.

Silver trades the same way; see the silver perp chart. On 12 October silver had $44M of volume, more than gold's $25M.

On-chain vs a broker CFD

A CFD broker gives you similar price exposure, but trading hours, pricing and custody depend on the broker. On-chain, the order book and your positions are visible on a public ledger, your collateral stays in your wallet's account rather than a broker's, and the market doesn't close. The trade-offs are that you manage your own wallet and that weekend liquidity is thinner. Our DEX vs CEX liquidity breakdown covers the wider picture.

Frequently asked questions

Can you trade gold on the weekend?

Yes. A gold perpetual on-chain trades 24/7, including weekends, while the traditional gold futures market is closed. Expect thinner liquidity and a possible gap when the traditional market reopens.

What does it cost to hold a gold perp?

Funding plus trading fees. At the +5.5% APR funding our radar showed on 12 October 2026, a $10,000 long held for 7 days pays about $10.55 in funding, before fees.

Do I own physical gold when I trade a gold perp?

No. A perp is a contract that tracks the gold price. You get price exposure and pay or receive funding, but there is no metal and no delivery.

What is the minimum trade size?

On SorooshX the minimum order value is $10, so a single trade can be very small.
