DEX vs CEX: Where Crypto Liquidity Lives and Why It Matters
A DEX lets you trade from your own wallet; a CEX holds your funds for you. Here is how liquidity, custody, fees and risk differ, and where SorooshX fits.

DEX vs CEX comes down to one question: who holds your money while you trade? On a centralized exchange (CEX) the company holds your deposits and matches orders on its own servers. On a decentralized exchange (DEX) trades settle on a blockchain and you trade from a wallet you control. That single difference changes liquidity, fees, speed and the risks you carry. This guide explains each, and where SorooshX sits between the two.
What a CEX does well
A centralized exchange runs a private order book. Professional market makers quote tight prices, orders match in microseconds, and you can usually deposit with a bank card. For years that made CEXs the deepest place to trade, especially for large orders and futures.
The cost is custody. Your balance is a promise from the exchange. If it is hacked, mismanaged, or freezes withdrawals, you wait in line with every other customer. Crypto has seen several exchange collapses where users lost access to funds for years.
How a DEX works
The first wave of DEXs replaced the order book with a liquidity pool: a smart contract holding two tokens that prices trades with a formula. Anyone can add liquidity and earn fees. Pools are simple and always open, but large trades move the price (slippage), and pool liquidity is spread thin across many chains.
The newer model is an on-chain order book. Buyers and sellers post limit orders like on a CEX, a matching engine fills them, and the result settles on-chain. You get CEX-style prices and order types while your funds stay in your own wallet.
Where liquidity is moving
Liquidity follows trust and cost. As fees on blockchains fell and on-chain order books matured, a growing share of spot and perpetual futures volume moved to decentralized venues (see DeFiLlama's DEX dashboard for live figures). CEXs still lead in fiat on-ramps and some long-tail coins; DEXs lead in transparency, since every trade and balance can be checked on-chain.
DEX vs CEX: risks side by side
| CEX | DEX / on-chain order book | |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds funds | The exchange | You |
| Main risk | Exchange failure, frozen withdrawals | Lost seed phrase, phishing, contract bugs |
| Sign-up | Account and ID checks | A wallet |
| Proof of reserves | Trust the company | Visible on-chain |
How to start on a DEX safely
- Use a reputable self-custody wallet and write the seed phrase on paper, never in a photo or cloud note.
- Type the exchange address yourself or use a saved bookmark; most wallet thefts start with a fake site.
- Start with a small deposit and one small trade so you see every confirmation screen before real size.
- Read what each signature asks for. A trade or order should never ask you to approve unlimited spending of a token you did not choose.
- Keep only trading funds in the hot wallet and the rest in cold storage.
Where SorooshX fits
SorooshX is an on-chain order book. You connect your own wallet, deposit USDC as margin and sign every order yourself. Prices, depth and order types work like a professional exchange, but SorooshX never takes custody of your funds. You can trade BTC, ETH and hundreds of other markets long or short.
Because custody is yours, so is security: keep your seed phrase offline and check every signature request. Before trading with leverage, read how funding rates and liquidation price work, and our guide to on-chain perps for CEX traders.
Market commentary, not investment advice. Leveraged products can lose more than your margin.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a DEX and a CEX?
A centralized exchange (CEX) holds your deposits and matches trades on its own servers. A decentralized exchange (DEX) settles trades on a blockchain, so you trade straight from a wallet you control and nobody can freeze your balance.
Is a DEX safer than a CEX?
It removes the risk of the exchange losing or freezing your funds, but moves responsibility to you: if you lose your seed phrase or sign a malicious transaction, nobody can reverse it. Smart-contract bugs are a second risk.
How do I use a decentralized exchange?
Connect a self-custody wallet, fund it with the asset the venue uses for margin or swaps (often USDC), approve the trade in your wallet and confirm. On SorooshX you connect a wallet, deposit USDC and every order is signed by you.
Why do DEX prices sometimes differ from CEX prices?
Each venue has its own buyers and sellers. Arbitrage traders close most gaps quickly, but thin pools or fast markets can leave small differences, which shows up as slippage.
